Q & A about WINART4

Q1: What was the purpose of the WINART4 workshop?

A1: The main purpose of the WINART4 workshop is to bring together women and non-binary people to do research in various subfields of noncommutative algebra and in representation theory. A secondary purpose of the workshop is to help expand the professional network of its participants.

There will be 7 research groups consisting of 4-6 participants total, each led by 2 research leaders. We will have a variety of research topics present at the WINART4 workshop, and will form groups several months before the workshop so that participants have ample time to prepare for and share ideas for projects.

Q2: How will WINART4 run?

A2: WINART4 will run nearly in the same fashion as other WINART workshops (see Section 2 of the WINART1 BIRS final report), but with some improvements including a two-way matching system for the applicants and group leaders. In short, the vast majority of the week will be set aside for research group meetings; there will be few talks and there will also be some social/ professional development activities.

Q3: How will participants be selected and how much say will group leaders have in the formation of the group?

A3: We will have an application process for participants in which they indicated preferences for research group leaders, with deadline August 1, 2024. After the deadline, we will provide group leaders with the list of applicants interested in working with them. Group leaders will specify their preferences to the organizers, and the organizers formed groups based on these preferences along with other factors. For instance, we want to make sure that the workshop was diverse in various ways (mathematically, geographically, ethnically, rank-wise, institution-type-wise). We will also have a preference to accept applicants who did not participate in WINART1, WINART2, WINART3 nor had a prior/ current connection to a WINART3 group leader (e.g., student, postdoc, collaborator). There are 42 slots for a full BIRS workshop.

Q4: When will applicants find out whether they have been accepted to the workshop and to which group they belong?

A4: The organizers will announce the results in September 2024.

Q5: Will a publication be required at the end of WINART4?

A5: No. But, as usual for participation in a research workshop, publications are an ideal outcome. Products will be posted on our site.

Q6: Will there be travel and accommodation funding available?

A6: BIRS provides housing and food accommodations, and the organizers will apply for funding to cover some flights. Details about the latter will be announced later.

Q7: Will there be child-care (funding) available?

A7: Yes, please see information from BIRS: here.
